Chicago at St Louis 7:45 PM EST
Line: Cardinals -175
Pitching Match-up: Thompson vs Wainwright
MLB trade deadline day is always a tricky one so be cautious if you are wagering early in the day. The Cardinals were in the running for Juan Soto but he will be traded to the Padres along with Josh Bell. As of writing this breakdown, the Cardinals had not done anything yet on Tuesday.
That doesn’t concern us anyway because we are not on the side. We are looking at the total here and we like the Under. Chicago won their first 5 games out of the All-Star Break and scored 32 runs in the process. But they came back down to earth in their 4 game series against San Francisco in which they lost 3 and scored only 10 runs.
They have a middle of the road lineup, but their pitching has been pretty good as of late as they have allowed 27 runs in their last 9 games. Keegan Thompson gets the start this evening and he has been good in 5 of his last 7 starts. He had a bad start against the Mets where he went 4 1/3 innings and allowed 5 runs but in his 3 other starts in July, he has pitched 16 2/3 innings and allowed just 1 earned run.
The Cardinals are playing their first home game in the last 2 weeks and something to note about this team is they have played 6 games this season returning from a road trip 6 games or more and they have scored a total of 14 runs in those 6 games. (4 of those runs were scored in extra innings)
In the last 2 instances, they were shutout as they lost 2-0 to the Phillies on July 8th and 3-0 against the Cubs on June 24th. Also, in those 6 games, the average was 5.3 runs scored. Adam Wainwright is on the hill tonight and he is off an impressive start against Toronto where he went 7 innings and allowed 1 earned run. In his only start against Chicago this year he went 7 innings and allowed 2 earned runs.
We expect a low scoring game this evening and we feel there is value with this total as it should be 7. We’ll take the extra run they are giving us and play the under.
