Arizona Cardinals vs. Washington Commanders

We have a NFC non-divisional matchup for Week 1 as the Arizona Cardinals are on the road as they head to FedEx Field against the Washington Nationals. The Cardinals are last in the NFC West with a 4-13 a year ago while the Commanders finished the 2022 season with an 8-8-1 record.

Cardinals vs. Commanders Key Stats

Arizona Cardinals

The Arizona Cardinals struggled offensively last season as they are 21st in the NFL with 20 points and 22nd with 323.5 total yards per game. They are one of the most depleted rosters as they have quarterback Kyler Murray on the PUP List as he recovers from a torn ACL, wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins, and wide receiver Robbie Anderson. They will likely be starting Joshua Dobbs under center and under first year coach Jonathan Gannon, it will be interesting to see if they can stay competitive despite being bereft of talent.

Their defense was one of the worst a year ago as they were 31st with 26.4 points and 21st with 348.9 total yards per game. The franchise lost cornerback Byron Murphy, defensive end Zach Allen, defensive end JJ Watt, linebacker Isaiah Simmons and linebacker Markus Golden. They added cornerback Kel’Trel Clark in the sixth round of the draft and should be a young team. This team needs to figure things out as they prepare for a big season going forward.

Washington Commanders

The Washington Commanders are trying to get going on the offensive side of things this season as they are 24th in the sport in points (18.9) and total yards per game (330.3). They added offensive coordinator Eric Bienemy and new offensive linemen so it will be interesting to see if things are able to change and this offense could dominate with Sam Howell and an incredible wide receiver core.

The defense of this franchise is one of the best in the sport as they allowed 20.2 points (eighth) on 304.6 total yards per game (third). Their massive boost was the fact they allowed just 31.9 percent of third downs allowed, which was the best of the sport. This team was able to add a talented cornerback in the first round of the draft with Emmanuel Forbes Jr and Jartavius Marin in the second round. If this defense can continue their dominance, it will be a huge plus for a team trying to compete in the NFC East.

Cardinals vs. Commanders Prediction

This Arizona Cardinals team will be struggling as Joshua Dobbs barely has been with the organization and is now starting. The Cardinals do not have the talent to compete and their offense is going to be brutal, especially against one of the best defensive teams in the sport. Sam Howell has a softer landing for the season and while I would hammer the under in this game, go with Washington to start the year off strong.
