The Seattle Mariners have been trying to get going throughout the season as they are third in the NL West with a 56-52 record. Rookie righty Bryan Woo gets the start here and did not factor into the decision against the Arizona Diamondbacks in his previous start. Woo pitched 5.0 innings and gave up three runs on seven hits with two walks and zero strikeouts.

The Los Angeles Angels have some work to do to make the postseason as they are fourth in the AL West with a 56-53 record so far. Right-hander Shohei Ohtani is on the mound and coming off his best start in MLB as he pitched a complete game shutout against the Detroit Tigers where he allowed one hit, three walks and eight strikeouts.

Mariners vs. Angels Key Stats

Seattle Mariners

The Seattle Mariners have been a solid offensive throughout the season. They are ninth in the majors with a .711 OPS while scoring 4.55 runs per game. In their 51 road games, they are 14th with a .238/.312/.402 team slash line and scoring 4.65 runs per game. Shortstop J.P. Crawford is hitting decently well and has a .778 OPS with nine homers, 36 RBIs, and 59 runs scored.

Bryan Woo has been struggling on the bump this year. He is sitting at 1-3 with a 4.96 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP across 49 innings of work. The biggest issue has been the fact that Freeland has allowed 11 home runs entering this game. Hitters are having good swings against his stuff as they have a .247 batting average against so far. He faced the Angels once this season and was not in the decision. In the game, he threw 4.2 innings and gave up two runs on four hits with one walk and seven strikeouts.

Los Angeles Angels

The Los Angeles Angels quietly have been one of the best offenses this year. Los Angeles is sitting at fourth in MLB with a .778 OPS while averaging 4.94 runs per game up to this point. They have been hitting at home well so far. In their 52 home games, they have posted a .774 OPS while averaging 4.83 runs thus far. Right fielder Hunter Renfoe has been decent at the plate. He is slashing .251/.310/.451 with 17 home runs, 47 RBIs and 49 runs scored.

Shohei Ohtani has been incredible on the mound so far this season when looking at his stats. He is currently 9-5 with a 3.43 ERA and a 1.07 WHIP over 120.2 innings. He has been staying ahead in the count lately as he has four walks to 17 strikeouts in his previous two starts. Looking at the hitter’s approach, he is almost untouchable with a career-best .185 opposing batting average. This will be his third start of the year against Seattle and he is 1-0 in 11 innings and gave up four runs on seven hits with three hit by pitches, nine walks and 14 strikeouts.

Mariners vs. Angels Prediction

I understand the idea of Shohei Ohtani pitching should be something to back here but he has not pitched well against this Mariners lineup whatsoever. Seattle is not going to let Bryan Woo get hit around here as they have the second-best bullpen in baseball with a 3.56 reliever ERA this season. The Mariners actually have a 31-29 advantage on the scoreboard this season against the Angels. Everything is pointing towards Ohtani struggling here once again and the Mariners picking up the victory.
