Thursday night is set for an ACC showdown between Virginia Tech (2-5) and NC State (5-2) in Raleigh. Kickoff starts at 7:30pm EST with NC State favored by a whopping 13.5 points and the over/under set at 40.
The last matchup, which was over two years ago, had a very different outlook, with the 6.5 favorite Virginia Tech dominating NC State in a 45-24 victory.
Virginia Tech Overview
Virginia Tech is off to a rough 2-5 start to the season, losing four of their last five games. They also failed to cover the spread in four of these five games. The Hokies are coming off of a bye week, but their last game was a 14-20 loss against the Miami Hurricanes that saw Virginia Tech fail to cover the +9.5 point spread. Virginia’s offense failed to get going as quarterback Grant Wells threw for only 179 yards and one touchdown. Malachi Thomas led in yards both through the air and on the ground with 43 and 41, respectively, and a receiving touchdown. Virginia Tech was only able to put together 257 yards of offense.
Virginia Tech is bottom three in their conference in points per game this season, with just 19.1. Their offense has also averaged only 4.2 yards per play. They haven’t been anything particularly special on the other end of the ball, either, allowing 25.1 points per game, which is sixth most in their conference.
NC State Overview
NC State has gotten off to a solid start to their season, winning four straight before their first loss. They are also coming off of a bye week, and a 9-24 loss to Syracuse in which they failed to cover the +3 spread. Quarterback Jack Chambers was only able to complete 18 of his 30 pass attempts for 160 yards. He also led the team in rushing yards and carries. They weren’t any better through the air, with leading receiver Keyon Lesane only grabbing 4 receptions for 39 yards. All of NC State’s points came from field goals and they were only able to get 267 yards of offense.
NC State ranks in the lower half of the ACC in points per game with 27.4 at ninth place. However, they also rank second in points allowed with just 16.9. NC State’s defense has been very good so far, grabbing 11 interceptions in seven games, which is tied for seventh most in FBS.
Free Pick: Virginia Tech +13.5
Although Virginia Tech has been awful offensively thus far, NC State has not been much better, which is why we like Virginia Tech +13.5. We don’t see a lot of offense happening in this game, which makes it hard for us to see NC State covering a spread of two scores.
