The New York Yankees are trying to stay alive in the AL Wild Card race but are faltering as they are last in the AL East with a 59-56 record. Rookie right-hander Randy Vasquez will get the spot start here as he has not pitched in the majors since July 5 where he threw five shutout innings against the Baltimore Orioles.
The Miami Marlins have been incredibly brutal as of late as they are holding onto third place in the NL East with a 60-56 record so far. Young southpaw Jesus Luzardo will b taking the ball here and is coming off a losing effort against the Texas Rangers where he pitched 5.1 innings and allowed four runs on six hits with two walks and eight strikeouts.

Yankees vs. Marlins Key Stats
New York Yankees
The New York Yankees have to be better offensively than they have been this year. They are currently tied with the Colorado Rockies for 21st in baseball with a .711 OPS while scoring 4.3 runs per game. New York still has shown the ability to hit the long ball throughout the year though as they are seventh in the majors with 159 home runs as a team. Second baseman Gleyber Torres has been hitting pretty well this season as he has a .270/.336/.444 slash line with 18 homers, 48 RBIs, 64 runs scored and nine steals on 14 tries.
Randy Vasquez has been extremely effective in his three spot starts throughout the season as he has a 1-1 record with a 1.17 ERA and a 1.04 WHIP in 15.1 innings. His biggest issue has been with his command as he has seven walks compared to 10 strikeouts at the big league level. He does limit damage as he has not allowed more than two runs in any of his starts heading into this game. If Vasquez can get going and get some quick outs, the Yankees will be thrilled.
Miami Marlins
The Miami Marlins have been an average offensive team so far this season as they are 17th in MLB with a .718 OPS while averaging 4.05 runs per game up to this point. They have been one of the best hitting teams in terms of batting average as they currently are third in the sport with a .262 batting average so far. Second baseman Luis Arraez has been doing extremely well as he has a .874 OPS with three home runs, 52 RBIs, 47 runs scored and a 31:28 walk-to-strikeout ratio.
Jesus Luzardo has been doing very well up to this point. He is currently 8-6 with a 3.52 ERA and a 1.20 WHIP over 130.1 innings in his 23 starts. Hitters have been struggling to hit for power against him as hitters have 16 home runs against him, or one every eight innings. This is also the most innings he has pitched in a season as his previous career-high was 100.1 last season. Luzardo faced the Yankees once out of the bullpen in 2021 and only pitched 0.1 innings so it will be interesting to see how he does here.
Yankees vs. Marlins Prediction
This Marlins team has not been able to get going since the All-Star break as they are 7-17 in the 24 games. The ability to get on base is critical to be successful and the Yankees are posting a .371 on base percentage in their last six games while the Marlins have a .268 OBP in the previous six games. Everything is pointing towards the Yankees picking up a road win to open this interleague series.
