Denver Broncos vs. Los Angeles Chargers Breakdown and Betting Odds
Division rivals are set to square off on Monday Night Football as the Denver Broncos (2-3) head to SoFi Stadium to face the Los Angeles Chargers (3-2). Kickoff is set for 8:15 PM EST with the Chargers favored by 4.5 points and the over/under set at 46.5.
Denver Broncos Overview
The Broncos are off to a shaky start to the season. Expectations were high after Denver traded for star veteran quarterback Russel Wilson. However, the production simply hasn’t been there, with the Broncos punching in a league low 1.2 touchdowns per game. Questions have risen as to whether or not Russel Wilson is fit to lead this team, and the numbers are not helping his case.
Denver is coming off a long rest after playing the Colts on Thursday Night Football in Week 5, in a 9-12 loss, failing to cover the -3.5 point spread. Their offense looked stagnant as Russel Wilson completed only 21 of 39 attempts and threw 2 interceptions. The Broncos were unable to score a touchdown in this game, most notably dropping one on fourth down for the last play of the game in overtime to seal the victory.
The Broncos have a tough matchup this week, going up against a potent Chargers’ offense, that is putting up 2.8 touchdowns per game, which is eighth highest in the league. However, their defense has looked stellar this season, allowing only six touchdowns so far, good enough for second best in the league.
Los Angeles Chargers Overview
The Chargers have looked good thus far, even with injuries to Justin Herbert as well as Keenan Allen. With offseason signings bulking up their defensive and offensive lines, this seasons’ Chargers team is much improved over last seasons’. However, coaching has been a big question this season, with many wondering whether head coach Brandon Staley is making the right decisions.
Los Angeles is coming off of a very close game last week, in a 30-28 game against the Browns, which saw them cover the -1.5 point spread. Austin Ekeler continued his hot streak this game, rushing for 173 yards on 10.8 yards per carry and punching in two touchdowns. Receiver Mike Williams also looked great, grabbing 10 receptions, and running for 134 yards.
Although the Chargers won, the major controversy comes from the chargers last drive of the game, with just over one minute left and up two points, Staley decided to go for it on fourth and one at the Chargers’ 46 yard line. They ended up turning it over on downs and were able to hold on to the victory as the Browns missed a game winning 54 yard field goal.
TakingVegas.com 1* Free Pick: Under 46.5
With the Broncos’ inability to score touchdowns, as well their stellar defense, we like the Under 46.5. While the Chargers have great rushing and receiving weapons, the Broncos are allowing the third least opponent passing yards and are around league average for opponent rushing yards. Furthermore, four out the last five Broncos’ games have gone under.
