Phoenix Suns vs. Dallas Mavericks Breakdown and Betting Odds
A rematch from the 2022 playoffs is set for opening week in the NBA as the Dallas Mavericks head to the Footprint Center to face off against the Phoenix Suns. Tip-off is set for 10:00 PM EST with the Suns favored by 5 points and the over/under set at 216.5.
The last time these two teams faced off was in Game 7 of the 2022 Western Conference Semifinals in which the Mavericks blew the Suns out in a 123-90 victory to move on to the Conference Finals.
Phoenix Suns Overview
The Suns 2022 offseason likely didn’t go as planned. With rumors of KD coming to the team gaining traction over the summer, Phoenix fans were heavily interested in seeing what the team would do. Instead, the Suns really only added role players to the team, seeing the likes of Damion Lee and Josh Okogie making their way to Phoenix. They also lost free agents Javale McGee, Aaron Holiday, and Elfrid Payton in the offseason.
One of the biggest specters over the team currently is the status of Jae Crowder, who requested a trade over the summer. Crowder was looking for a contract extension that the Suns didn’t want to give him, which resulted in the two year forward requesting a trade. Crowder was also disgruntled over the fact that he may see a more limited role, giving up his starting spot to Cam Johnson. Both were key players for the Suns during their NBA Finals run in 2021.
Last season, the Suns scored the fifth most points per game in the league on offense. They also conceded the ninth least points per game on defense. A lot of their offensive production came form beyond the arc, making 11.6 three pointers per game on 36.4% shooting.
Dallas Mavericks Overview
The Mavericks’ made major splashes this past offseason. Jalen Brunson, coming off of a spectacular run in the playoffs, decided to sign with the New York Knicks as a free agent. After losing so much offensive production, the Mavs made a huge trade for Houston’s Christian Wood, giving up four players in exchange for the eighth year forward. Former Maverick Javale McGee was also signed to the team as a free agent. These two are sure to buff up the Maverick’s paint presence, which was one of their major concerns in past seasons.
The Mavs had a top-five defense last season, giving up only 104.7 points per game, good enough for second best in the league. However, they ranked only 24th on the offensive side of the ball, scoring 108 points per game. They made 13.1 threes per game on 35% shooting.
My Free Pick: Suns -5
After the blowout in the playoffs, we like the Suns -5 here. We think the Suns have marked this game on the calendar as a revenge game and will look to dominate the Mavericks. Furthermore, we do not yet know what Dallas’ offense or defense will look like, after losing a key player in their lineup. Phoenix, on the other hand, has essentially the same roster, one that has been building chemistry for years and will not be experiencing any growing pains.
