Patriots vs. Cowboys Key Stats

New England Patriots

The New England Patriots have been a struggling offensive team as they are averaging 17.3 points (26th) on 342.7 total yards per game (17th). Quarterback Mac Jones has been doing an average job throwing the football as he is 81-of-125 (64.8 completion percentage) for 748 yards with five touchdowns and two interceptions. They need to run the ball a lot better as a team as they have only had one rushing touchdown through the first three games. This offense has to do better than league average if they want to get to .500 this season.

The defense for the Patriots has been solid as they are ninth in points allowed (19.7) and fifth in total yards (270.3). They have an incredible ability to get to the quarterback as linebacker Matthew Judon is tied for fourth in the league with four sacks. The bread and butter had been their third down defense as through three games, teams are converting on just 10-for-37 (27.03 percent) attempts. If the defense can continue to show up, this New England team can win a bunch of games.

Dallas Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys have been a good offense to begin the season as they are tied for fifth in points (28.7) and 11th in total yards (354.3). A big part of the offense under head coach Mike McCarthy has been to establish the run as they are seventh with 147 rushing yards per game. Quarterback Dak Prescott has to step up more as he is 69-of-102 (67.6 completion percentage) for 647 yards with three touchdowns and one interception. Running back Tony Pollard is taking a big role in this offense as he has run the ball 62 times for 264 yards (4.3 yards per carry) with a pair of rushing touchdowns as well as 12 receptions for 48 yards (4.0 yards per catch). This offense needs to be more effective in the red zone as they were 1-for-5 and it’ll be tough with the injuries plaguing the offensive line.

The defense for the Cowboys has been elite as they are giving up 12.7 points (third in NFL) on 262 total yards per game (fourth in NFL). They need to figure out how to defend after having more than a week to adjust to the season-ending injury for cornerback Trevon Diggs. Linebacker Micah Parsons is making a strong case for the Defensive Player of the Year Award in the early going as he has four sacks, 12 total tackles, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery and a pass deflection so far. Teams cannot convert consistently on third down against this Dallas defense as they are only 11-of-36 (30.56 percent). If they can shake off the embarrassment that was last week, they will be in a great spot to bounce back at home in this matchup.
