Saints vs. Panthers Key Stats
New Orleans Saints
The New Orleans Saints did not do too well offensively in their opening game against the Tennessee Titans as they finished with 16 points on 351 total yards. The team did a decent job as they finished going 7-of-16 on third down opportunities. However, they only recorded 15 first downs throughout the game. Their running game took a step back as they are without running back Alvin Kamara as he serves his suspension but the team finished with 69 rushing yards. New Orleans has to come up with more points in the red zone as they finished 1-of-4 in the red zone as well. Two turnovers (one fumble, one interception) needs to get cleaned up. However, a win is a win and starting off 1-0 with Derek Carr playing decently well is the most important. Wide receiver Chris Olave had a huge game as he had eight receptions for 112 yards to emerge as a top pass-catcher in this offense.
The defense did very well as they allowed 15 points on 285 total yards. The defense held the Titans to just 2-of-12 on third down and forced three interceptions throughout the game. They were doing incredibly well in the passing game as New Orleans finished with three sacks, 11 pass deflections and 10 quarterback hits. Their defense has been doing well and need to continue stepping up if they want to win this division.
Carolina Panthers
The Carolina Panthers struggled offensively as they finished Week 1 with 10 points on 300 total yards against the Atlanta Falcons. Rookie quarterback Bryce Young struggled in his first game as he was 20-of-38 for 146 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions. The team finished 5-of-14 on third down and 0-of-2 on fourth down throughout the game. Carolina needs to be better keeping possession as they had three turnovers (one fumble, two interceptions). The offense was not able to get many big plays as they had one 20+ yard play offensively in the game. It will be interesting to see how the offense plays against another divisional opponent. Coach Frank Reich needs to get the offense going.
The defense did a decent job as they allowed 24 points on just 221 total yards against. They held the Falcons to 13 first downs and 2-of-10 on third down so the special teams unit was on the field often. However, the Panthers need to defend better against the running game as Atlanta averaged five yards per carry and three rushing touchdowns in the opening game of the season. Carolina got pressure as they finished with four sacks and six quarterback hits led by linebacker Brian Burns with a pair of sacks and a forced fumble in the game. If they can shut down the running game, they will be in a good position to pick up their first win of the season.
