Jets vs. Cowboys Key Stats

New York Jets

The New York Jets have to scrap the playbook after just one week as quarterback Aaron Rodgers suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon just four offensive snaps into his Jets career. They had to call on backup quarterback Zach Wilson to come back into the lineup and he did a decent job as he finished 14-of-21 for 140 yards with a touchdown and an interception. The team had a huge running game with the combination of Breece Hall and Dalvin Cook. Hall returned from a torn ACL last season and had 10 carries for 127 yards while also having a 20-yard reception in the season opener. The Jets have to play old school football in order to get sustainable drives going and put themselves in scoring opportunities. The offense has a ton of talent and the offensive line played better as the game progressed so it will be interesting to see how they do against one of the top defensive teams in the sport.

The defense was able to apply a good amount of pressure in Week 1 and did something they were not doing last year enough, force turnovers. The Jets allowed 314 total yards during the game but forced Josh Allen into four turnovers (three interceptions, one lost fumble). They also were forcing punts as Buffalo was 5-of-13 on third down attempts. New York also were able to get to the quarterback as the team recorded five sacks during the game as well. It might not have been the 1986 Bears but it definitely was a massive reason for the victory.

Dallas Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys did not have to do too much on the offensive side of the ball in the opening game. Dak Prescott was 13-of-24 for 143 yards without a touchdown or interception. The offensive line dominated as they did not allow a sack and just three quarterback hits. The running game dominated as they combined for 30 carries for 122 yards and three rushing touchdowns. Dallas did well in their first game without former offensive coordinator Kellen Moore as they were 6-of-13 on third down and 1-of-2 on fourth down as well. However, the injury report has wide receiver Brandin Cooks with a sprained MCL and is listed as questionable while they also have some offensive line injuries to keep an eye on.

The defense did an incredible job as they did not allow a single point and only allowed 171 total yards. They dominated early and often on all three facets of the game. Dallas was able to record a pair of non-offensive touchdowns and forced three total turnovers (two interceptions, one fumble recovery) and what is even better is the fact the Giants were 0-for-2 in the red zone. With a weak quarterback, they can stack the box and make Wilson have to prove he can throw the ball well enough here.
